Coming from the Great White North, it's clear that the idea of traveling around North America (literally) hits close to home for me. It is true that I do not feel the same attraction to visiting destinations close to home as more "exotic" places like Asia or even the most well-known streets of a European city.
However, I will admit that even without that feeling of being away from home that I seem to ultimately be addicted to: There are some very incredible places to visit on this great continent. Below you will find some of the best...

When to visit North America
Okay, trust me: I recognize the utter impossibility of answering this question in the above heading to anyone's satisfaction in a few choice words. (But hey, I had to stick to the same structure in all of these travel guides, so maybe you can give me a pass if my answer isn't satisfactory. Deal?)
On a continent so vast and spanning numerous climatic zones, it is inevitable that there will be some inconsistencies when determining when to visit. The time of year to visit North America depends on both your destination and your interests.
In general, the best time to visit North America is in the summer months, between June and August, or in late spring and early fall. Of course, this is very misleading, as different destinations on the continent experience different weather patterns at the same time.
To fine-tune a little more, be sure to check the recommendations for each city or region you're planning to visit. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- The winter months can be unnervingly cold in the north of the continent. If you don't like the cold, avoid Canada and the northern United States in winter. However, if you like skiing or winter sports or want to see the Northern Lights, it is clearly a great season to travel to.
- On the other hand, the southern United States and Mexico can offer respite from the cold in the winter months for northerners.
- Hurricane season takes place between June and November in southern areas of North America. Be sure to keep an eye on the weather before traveling south at this time.
- For hiking, fall is usually one of the best times of year to visit North America. In popular hiking locations, such as Utah, the summer heat can be excessive. In spring, mosquitoes in other parts of the continent can be a real nuisance. (Believe me, I grew up in Northern Ontario, you don't want to deal with this!)
Where to go in North America
Like the climate, on a continent as diverse and varied as North America, it is impossible to summarize exactly what to expect. Traversing the continent, travelers can experience a seemingly endless area of landscapes, from picture-perfect coastlines to primeval forests, desolate deserts and awe-inspiring alpine landscapes.
1. Canada
As the second largest country in the world, Canada is a good bet to cover if you are looking to stock up on a true lifetime of experiences. While cities like Vancouver, Montreal or Toronto are the first ones you think of when planning a trip to Canada, they certainly take a backseat to the wealth of natural beauty found here.
Along the west coast, Canada's best landscapes await. Windswept coastlines give way to coastal mountains that merge inland to the east for a distance that would contain one or two European countries. The east coast, with its relaxed maritime attitude and seascape, offers an equally alluring getaway.
However, the most attractive thing about Canada is its diversity. If you walk the streets of your favorite Canadian city, you're just as likely to come across a curry house or ramen restaurant as you are a poutinerie .
Add world-renowned courtesy and hospitality (and a healthy national obsession with hockey) to the mix, and you'll see why so many travelers feel immediately at home in the Great White North.
2. United States
Like its neighbor to the north, trying to get an idea of what awaits the traveler in the United States is simply impossible. The extent of the entire country, from east to west and north to south, across various time and climate zones, is a simple indicator of the variety of landscapes you will encounter. From deserts surrounded by canyons and mountains to lush forests spread over rivers and alpine mountain landscapes, it's all there for the taking.
Perhaps the cities of the United States are more famous than their natural attractions. There is almost no one in the world who has not dreamed of drowning in the hustle and bustle of New York, celebrity hunting in Los Angeles, loosening their pockets in Las Vegas or relaxing to the rhythm of jazz in New Orleans.
Whatever the side of the coin, the United States is not a travel destination that will disappoint you.
Transportation in North America
By air
Unless you enter by road from Central America (probably not the smartest decision these days!), you will arrive in North America by air.
From almost every corner of the world, you'll find flights to major North American airports, including:
- Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
- New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
- Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ)
- Mexico City International Airport (MEX)
- Vancouver International Airport (YVR)
- Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL).
How to get around
By air
Thanks to increased competition across the continent, air travel is becoming more affordable in North America. There are several low-cost airlines, such as Southwest and JetBlue in the United States and Porter, WestJet and Air Canada Rouge in Canada.
By bus
Although the bus is often the cheapest way to travel in North America, it is rarely the most comfortable means of transportation given the long distances between many cities.
By train
More comfortable than buses, trains can be a good option for certain itineraries (and for train fans, of course). In the United States, Amtrak has an extensive rail network that stretches from coast to coast.
