The days are shorter, the jackets are thicker, and our lattes are suddenly full of pumpkin. Autumn has finally arrived.

Luckily, October is one of the best months to travel abroad. October is low season almost everywhere, meaning flights and accommodation are at a premium. Plus, everyone who left in the summer or traveled in the month of September is home, so crowds are minimal.

It would be a crime not to take advantage of the cheap travel and fantastic adventure opportunities in October.

Nepal for epic trekking

October is the prime month for trekking in Nepal, as the monsoon rains have dried up and the weather is mild. Additionally, this month usually has excellent visibility, making the views of the Himalayas even more impressive.

The number one adventure activity in Nepal is trekking to Everest Base Camp, the largest mountain in the world. In total, this trekking lasts about 14 days with a maximum walking time of five hours a day.

The number of hours of hiking per day is limited to five to allow you to acclimatize to the altitude gradually. After all, you are climbing to 17,600 feet. Moving slowly and adapting to the altitude will prevent altitude sickness from occurring, which is quite unpleasant.

Fortunately, the air is easier to breathe in October, as it is comfortably around 68 degrees Fahrenheit outside.

If you have more time, there are several detours that can be taken along the way. One of the most popular is the hike that leads to the impressive Gokyo lakes. These lakes are the brightest turquoise ever seen and are flanked by rugged mountain peaks that are still snow-capped in October.

Every year, on the last Saturday of October, Taiwan hosts one of the most spectacular Pride parades in the world. The capital, Taipei, welcomes around 80,000 people each year and explodes with color and sound as the parade winds through the city. It is the largest gay pride event in Asia.

Two groups of participants start the parade from Kaidagelan Boulevard, move through the streets of Taipei and finish at the starting point about two hours later. A group heads north and marches through Xinyi, Linsen South, Zhongxiao East, Jinshan South and Renai streets before returning to the boulevard.

The other group heads south and parades along Zhongshan South Road, Roosevelt Road, Hangzhou South Road and Renai Road before also ending their march on the boulevard. The main parade is followed by a big dance party at the Gay Pride Village.

The festivities will continue throughout the weekend. Some of the most popular parties take place on Saturday nights at the W Hotel Taipei, where famous DJs from around the world spin music. There are more parties at all the gay bars and clubs in Ximen's Red House district.

Taipei has a vibrant nightlife, with more than 20 bars and three gay clubs, so Pride weekend is nothing but a good time.

Be sure to wear something rainbow-colored to show your support for the parade, and get ready for a long weekend of standing, marching and dancing.

Mexico will celebrate the Day of the Dead

Mexico City, known simply as The City to Mexicans, is full of adventure possibilities. The main attraction of traveling to Mexico in October is the Day of the Dead, one of the most colorful and exciting holidays in the country. It begins on October 31 and runs until November 12.

And although it is the same day as Halloween, let's be clear: this is not a Mexican version of it. More than scares and jokes, the Day of the Dead is an ancient celebration to pay tribute to deceased ancestors. Parades of dancers dress in elaborate costumes and fill the streets in a display that represents remembrance for lost friends and family.

Of course, if you can't make it to the festival, plenty of activities await you in Mexico's pulsating capital. The month of October is a prime time to go up into the mountains, as the rainy season is coming to an end, so the trails will be cooler and there will be much less foot traffic than in the summer months.

Just two hours from the city center is the formidable Iztaccíhuatl volcano (don't bother trying to pronounce it). The Iztaccíhuatl mountain was named "La Mujer Dormida" (which translates as "The Sleeping Woman") because it bears a resemblance to a woman who sleeps on her back.

The hike to the top takes three hours and is challenging, so you'll need a decent level of fitness to reach the snowy summit at 17,159′ feet.

Romania to visit Dracula

What better place to spend Halloween than the homeland of Dracula? Romania is slowly gaining popularity among the travel community, and with good reason. However, it remains one of the least visited countries in Europe, meaning you'll find cheap prices and virtually no crowds all year round.

The attractions of visiting Romania in October are numerous, but the main advantages are the cool weather and the spookiness of Transylvania at Halloween. Transylvania is a region in central Romania known for its medieval cities filled with bloodthirsty vampires, howling wolves, and castles such as Bran, a Gothic fortress associated with the legend of Dracula.

Dracula's Castle is located on the border between Transylvania and Wallachia. He may have convinced himself that Dracula is nothing more than a fictional character, but he's sure to leave the castle with a "what if..." floating in his mind. And what better time of year to get scared than October?

The walk to the castle, from the parking area, is up a very steep slope and takes about 10 minutes. But the views of the leafy valley surrounding the castle will distract you from your burning glutes. To the east of the castle are the Carpathians, "the land beyond the forest", so the views are worth it.

Yes, Transylvania is most famous for its association with Dracula, but once you delve into its heart, you will discover that it is actually one of Europe's hidden gems. It is also home to some of Romania's most interesting historical cities, such as Timisoara, Brasov, Arad, Sibiu and Sighisoara. It would be advisable to rent a car and explore the region for a few days.

Germany to party at the Oktoberfest

Oddly enough, Oktoberfest starts in September (but lasts until October 6, so don't worry). The beer festival originated in Munich, Germany, and has since spread around the world, although Munich's remains the biggest and craziest of all. We are talking about between six and seven million visitors each year who consume more than six million liters of beer during the event.

The beer starts flowing every weekday at 10 a.m. and on the weekend at 9 a.m. At 10:45 a.m. on the first day of Oktoberfest, the brewers' parade runs through the city until it reaches Wiesn. That's where the first barrel opens.

And the last call isn't until 10:30 pm. That leaves you more than 12 hours to make probably bad decisions with your colleagues.

As Oktoberfest revelers continue to take over Munich in early October, the entire city feels alive. The breweries hum with drunken energy and the parties are world class. Yes, you'll wake up with a horrible hangover every day, but it'll be nothing a bratwurst can't fix. Or a little dog hair.

Jordan to witness the desert

Jordan is a haven of calm in an otherwise chaotic region, and October is low season, meaning the temperature is manageable and deliciously cheap flights can be found.

You will need at least two days to explore the huge Wadi Rum. It is a protected desert area in southern Jordan. It is full of prehistoric inscriptions and engravings in rocky caverns and steep chasms. The red sand dunes beg to be crossed in a big, powerful jeep. And that's exactly what you should do.

Spend your days riding through the vast desert. Stop at famous spots (without all the tourists!) like the spectacular sandstone mountains. Among them, the Jebel Um Ishrin and natural arches such as the Burdah Rock Bridge. Burdah Rock Bridge is the highest natural arch in Wadi Rum.

Have you ever visited one of the seven wonders of the world? If you haven't, now is the time to change that. Petra, also known as the Pink City, is an archaeological site that dates back to approximately 300 BC. The site is surreal, which means it receives many visitors during the peak tourist months.

The builders designed the main temple on the face of a pinkish-brown cliff. Giant rocky mounds surround it. Take a leisurely stroll or get your adrenaline pumping by jumping on Petra's rocks.

Then there's the Dead Sea, which is technically a lake. Regardless of the time of year, no trip to Jordan would be complete without bobbing like a cork in this extremely salty body of water.

This paradisiacal island belongs to the archipelago of French Polynesia, in the South Pacific Ocean. In fact, Tahiti is the largest island in French Polynesia. And October is the end of Tahiti's peak season, so tourist numbers start to dwindle, but the rainy season is still at bay.

In reality, Tahiti only has two distinct seasons: winter and summer. Temperatures in Tahiti are mild all year round, but the winter season enjoys much less humidity and less rain.

The months between May and October constitute Tahiti's dry season, when average temperatures range between 60 and 80 degrees. However, the optimal beach climate has a drawback: tourists and maximum prices. So you have to go in October, when everyone starts coming home.

Like most island destinations, there are dozens of water adventures available in Tahiti. The surf is great especially in October, a month when there are usually impressive waves. Taapuna has waves between three and ten feet high, about a 20-minute walk from the shore. Maraa features waves from three to ten feet high that are just offshore, but are a little more difficult.

And Teahupo'o has waves from three to 12 feet high that are about a 30-minute paddle out to sea, if you can access it by paddling. Sometimes the waves are so intense that they can only be reached by boat, so this place is recommended only to avid surfers
