Best places to travel in June in Africa

Southern Africa's best wildlife destinations are found under clear skies in June. The cold nights and crisp mornings surprise some visitors (bring warm clothing and dress in layers for safaris), but southern Africa sees very little rain between June and October, except on the coasts of Cape Town and the Rte Garden.

As there is less rain and water, the fauna is concentrated around the last rivers and watering holes, making it very easy to locate the animals. Excellent game viewing can be expected in comfortable conditions: the days are short, so there is no need to get up early for morning game drives, and the mosquitoes and bugs of the rainy season have largely disappeared. The vegetation is sparse and thin, making it easy to observe the animals, and there is still a month before the arrival of the high season crowds of tourists.

In East Africa, things get very interesting in June. Some of Africa's most coveted wildlife events showcase their best attractions. It's a good time to combine an East African wildlife safari in Kenya or Tanzania with gorilla trekking (Rwanda, Uganda or Congo) or a getaway to an island in Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanzania.

Table

1. Uganda, Rwanda and Congo

June to September is one of the driest periods in the African equatorial rainforest, making Uganda, Rwanda and the Congo the best places to visit in June for gorilla trekking. In June, rainfall in Uganda is one-fifth of what it was in March; in Rwanda they are reduced to 10% of March and April levels, and in the Congo there is a similar decrease in rainfall between May and June. There will be some rain, but it won't feel like you're taking a daylong shower in rubber boots and a poncho.

Gorilla trekking safaris in Uganda are usually a longer itinerary that combines well with animal watching and chimpanzee trekking in other parks and reserves. Rwanda offers the option of exploring its beautiful capital, Kigali, and then moving to Volcanoes National Park, a few hours away, to trek in search of gorillas after breakfast the next morning. One of Africa's newest and most exciting destinations for gorilla trekking, the Congo allows intrepid travelers to encounter Western Lowland Gorillas in truly wild and untouched Africa.

2. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Starting around June, herds of migrating wildebeest arrive in the central Serengeti, where they will begin to prepare for the toughest part of their odyssey: the river crossing. Over the next month or so, the herds will begin to move north, entrenching themselves on the banks of the Grumeti River and peering into the silent water.

On the other side is fresh grass... and the wildebeest are hungry after their journey from the south. When the tension breaks, they begin to cross one by one before the storm breaks and the flocks pile up en masse. What follows is Mother Nature at her most bittersweet.

With a length of up to 5 meters and a weight of between 300 and 900 kilograms, the gigantic Nile crocodile is one of the most important predators in Africa. This enormous reptile, whose shape has not changed since the time of the dinosaurs, is armed with more than 60 dagger-shaped teeth and its bite is one of the most powerful in the animal kingdom. Rising from the water like an armored missile, the crocodiles grab the rowing wildebeests in a spectacular display of the rawest and most authentic nature.

3. Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

In life there is always a "but". Here it is: Serengeti River crossings are sensationally dramatic, but you'll have to share the experience. It is one of the most anticipated episodes of the wildebeest migration (especially because of the crocodiles) and the well-placed posts on the banks of the river are packed with animal driving vehicles.

Across the border, in Kenya's Masai Mara, things are decidedly quiet as far as two-legged visitors are concerned (everyone's in the Serengeti), but there are still plenty of resident animals to see. After crossing the Grumeti and Mara rivers, the wildebeest herds will not reach the Masai Mara until around August, but the Mara is preparing for their return: the grass is growing and predators are sharpening their stalking skills. Elephants, giraffes and buffalo remain in the area year-round, and the reserve's big cats (lions, leopards and cheetahs) are abundant and easy to spot in June.

The Masai Mara is the place to travel to in June to enjoy more comfortable conditions (the weather is cooler and drier than in previous months) and a greater range of accommodation than in August or September, when the coveted migration of the wildebeest Choose from the unmissable Masai Mara National Reserve itself, or head to one of the neighboring private conservancies for a more exclusive safari experience and off-reserve activities such as night drives and guided walks.

4. Kruger Park, South Africa

If you're looking for almost guaranteed encounters with the Big 5, the Kruger is the place to go in June. South Africa's largest and best-known safari destination is home to the country's greatest diversity of wildlife, and the Kruger's private game reserves offer unrivaled luxury.

The dry winter months, from May to October, are considered the best time to go to Kruger to see animals. Vegetation is low and sparse this time of year, making animals easier to see and follow. June to August is a very comfortable time in the Kruger, as the risk of malaria is low, it hardly rains and the temperatures are pleasant during the day and refreshing at night.

Safari Kruger Park Africa

The Kruger's private game reserves extend along much of the national park's western boundary. They are unfenced by the park - meaning the animals are free to roam - and include some of the most famous pioneers of the "luxury safari" concept. Not only can you expect five-star accommodation and a phenomenal guide, but your chances of seeing the Big Five are practically guaranteed. They also offer fewer restrictions than the national park, such as guided nature walks and driving animals off-road to see them up close.

5. Zanzibar, Tanzania

This is a destination famous for its beaches. Some of East Africa's best are located in Zanzibar and are easily accessible from family resorts, honeymoon retreats and boutique accommodation. And if your interest in the oceans extends to what happens underwater, Zanzibar is home to several top diving spots. The island's northern reefs are the best places to visit in June if you're looking for some of the best diving and snorkeling conditions of the year.
